What to establish before acting
Create a table separating energy, applicable capacity, transmission, ancillary services, losses, supplier fees, utility distribution, demand, taxes, and adjustments. Not every item applies or appears separately on every invoice. Fixed pricing also needs a defined scope. A public wholesale price and a state-average retail statistic answer different questions from an executable account-specific quote. Use consistent consumption and dates and show uncertain components explicitly rather than enter zero.
Illustrative decision boundary
An illustrative bill totals $2,000 on 20,000 kWh, giving an effective $0.10/kWh. If only $1,200 is competitive supply, comparing a $0.055/kWh supply offer with the full $0.10 figure overstates the potential reduction. Model the same components before assigning a dollar benefit.
Documents for a useful review
- Recent complete bills and the applicable tariff class.
- Supplier component schedules, fees, terms, and quote validity.
- Consistent usage assumptions and a documented baseline.
Questions & answers
Why do two nearby businesses get different rates?
Customer class, utility boundary, load timing, volume, credit, term, and flexibility can differ. Annual kWh alone does not establish the same wholesale cost or contractual risk.
Is a fixed supply rate a fixed monthly bill?
No. Actual consumption and excluded components can change. Check demand, delivery, fees, and specific adjustment clauses before promising a stable total payment.
What does all-in mean?
Require a written component definition. The phrase can refer to a supply package while utility delivery, taxes, or defined pass-throughs remain outside it. Compare the agreement rather than infer universal scope.
Can I use a national average as a quote?
No. A statistical average can provide context but combines different loads, services, and periods. It does not establish the offer available for your meters and requested term.
What information improves quote quality?
Accurate account lists, class, bills, usage, interval data where relevant, desired dates, and known operational changes reduce mismatched assumptions. Ask bidders to list any remaining estimates or exceptions.
