What to establish before acting
Use complete load and bill data to model self-consumption, exports, demand, and charges that remain. Production estimates should show location, design assumptions, losses, and uncertainty. Confirm roof or land rights, structural condition, interconnection, maintenance, removal, insurance, and assignment. Ownership, leases, and PPAs allocate responsibilities differently. Check current incentives with qualified advisers instead of assume an old published tax percentage applies. Backup operation is a separate system-design requirement.
Illustrative decision boundary
An illustrative system exports half its production at a lower value than avoided retail purchases. Multiplying every generated kWh by the blended utility rate would overstate benefit. Use the actual self-consumed and exported quantities and relevant tariff treatment before calculating payback.
Documents for a useful review
- Property rights, site engineering, load data, and interconnection requirements.
- Production assumptions, current tariff, export rules, and complete cash flow.
- Financing, maintenance, REC rights, transfer, and removal obligations.
Questions & answers
Will solar eliminate my bill?
Not necessarily. Customer, demand, standby, delivery, or other charges can remain, and output may not match load. Model the actual tariff rather than assume every charge is avoidable.
Can a tenant install a system?
It needs appropriate property permissions, term alignment, and a plan for relocation, removal, and maintenance. A short lease can make a long-lived asset or agreement difficult to administer.
Does solar work during an outage?
A standard grid-tied system should not be assumed to provide backup. Safe islanding, controls, storage or generation, critical-load design, and approvals may be required.
Do I own the renewable claim?
Only the relevant attribute rights establish that. Inspect REC ownership and any sale or retention by another party before making renewable-use statements.
What should a financial model include?
Installed cost, production timing, self-consumption, export value, maintenance, degradation, financing, verified incentives, contract obligations, and appropriate project interactions. Use qualified technical, tax, and legal review where material.
Can I budget savings from the signing date?
Not automatically. Installation, approvals, interconnection, commissioning, and billing can occur later. Model actual expected operation and clarify who bears delay costs under the agreement.
