What to establish before acting
Use the bill to establish the delivery company and customer class, then verify eligibility through the utility or commission. Competitive wholesale markets and retail shopping rights are separate. A municipal system, cooperative, capped program, or specialized large-customer arrangement may differ from a nearby investor-owned utility. Treat a general map as orientation rather than account approval. Once eligibility is confirmed, compare the applicable baseline and offers on matching periods, quantities, fees, and contractual scope.
Illustrative decision boundary
An illustrative business has one shop in an eligible investor-owned territory and another in a municipal system. It should not apply the first meter’s supply comparison to both automatically. The second account may need its own tariff, efficiency, or renewable-program review.
Documents for a useful review
- Recent bill identifying delivery utility, class, fuel, and current supplier.
- Current commission and utility eligibility resources.
- Existing agreement and normalized offer or tariff comparison.
Questions & answers
Does choice replace the delivery utility?
Usually a supplier change leaves local wires or pipes with the utility. Outages, service capacity, metering, and delivery tariffs remain distinct from the competitive commodity agreement.
Are gas and electricity choice identical?
No. Each fuel has separate utilities, programs, units, authorizations, and operational rules. Confirm both account arrangements even when one adviser manages the purchasing process.
Does an ISO or RTO guarantee supplier choice?
No. Wholesale grid-market membership does not establish a universal retail right. Check state and utility requirements for the particular customer.
Is competitive supply guaranteed to save money?
No. Market timing, future baseline changes, fees, load, and risk allocation determine results. Use an explicit comparison rather than a generic percentage.
Can choice support renewable purchasing?
Potentially, but eligibility and environmental attributes need separate verification. Regulated-area utility programs or certificates may also be relevant without ordinary retail switching rights.
Can wholesale competition exist without retail choice?
Yes. Generators and utilities can trade in an organized wholesale market while local customers remain on bundled utility service. Verify the retail account rules separately from the grid operator map.
