What to establish before acting
Record shifts, loading periods, occupied zones, charger schedules, process equipment, and required temperatures. Lighting and HVAC schedules can be reviewed against actual use, while critical loads need protection. Added forklifts, conveyors, or chargers can change both kWh and maximum simultaneous kW. Consult the utility and qualified professionals about service capacity independently of supply shopping. Use interval data to distinguish persistent baseload from specific overlaps and identify which tariff components a feasible change could affect.
Illustrative decision boundary
An illustrative warehouse charges several forklifts while HVAC starts before a shift. A qualified scheduling review may reduce overlap without changing total charging kWh. The resulting opportunity concerns the applicable peak; it should not be described as an equal percentage reduction in all energy charges.
Documents for a useful review
- Intervals, tariff, shifts, charger and equipment schedules.
- Dry or refrigerated use, required conditions, and planned load additions.
- Lighting inventory, utility capacity information, and supply-change provisions.
Questions & answers
Do LED savings depend on occupancy?
Yes. Actual fixture wattage, operating hours, controls, lighting requirements, and installed cost determine economics. Do not assume a product label establishes annual savings.
Will charger staggering always reduce demand cost?
Only if it lowers the tariff’s billed determinant without creating another peak or violating operating needs. Ratchets, minimums, and counting windows can limit the effect.
How should cold storage be benchmarked?
Compare appropriate refrigeration and operating conditions, not a dry warehouse’s raw intensity. Temperature, loading, doors, equipment, and product requirements influence use.
Can I add large loads after fixing supply?
Review both utility capacity and contract material-change or volume provisions. A supply price commitment does not upgrade electrical infrastructure or guarantee unchanged terms after a major load addition.
What does overnight demand tell me?
It identifies a pattern to investigate. Refrigeration, automation, security, or other essential services may explain it; confirm the cause before calling it waste.
Does a high load factor prove efficiency?
No. It can reflect productive continuous operation or avoidable baseload. Review actual useful work, required services, schedules, and equipment rather than maximize the ratio by consuming unnecessary energy.
