From wholesale purchases to a retail product

Providers combine market purchases and risk management into products a business can contract for. A fixed supply offer can include a premium for managing price, load shape, credit, and ordinary usage uncertainty. Indexed products allocate more market movement to the customer. The provider’s retail price therefore cannot be judged solely against today’s wholesale spot quote. Ask how the actual agreement defines supply, delivery period, losses, and included market-service costs before deciding whether the quoted margin is meaningful.

Authorization is territory and fuel specific

Supplier licensing or authorization is not a blanket endorsement of every product or sales statement. Verify the exact legal entity in the relevant regulator’s records and confirm that it serves the account’s utility and class. Electricity and gas may involve different authorizations and programs. A well-known trade name can cover several entities, so the name on the contract matters. Also identify who is the supplier of record and which company will answer billing or renewal questions.

Service quality includes contract administration

Evaluate sample bills, dispute procedures, credit support requirements, and the method for communicating changes. For a multi-site company, ask how additions, closures, and acquisitions are handled. A product that looks inexpensive can become difficult to administer if account-level data and notices are unclear. Do not equate a supply provider’s responsiveness with control over outage restoration; the local network utility ordinarily retains that responsibility. Record separate contacts for delivery emergencies and commercial supply administration.

Hypothetical provider comparison

Two suppliers offer the same modeled annual supply cost for a small portfolio. One agreement accommodates documented location closures; the other calculates a termination amount for each removed meter. If the business expects to consolidate facilities, that difference can outweigh a small price advantage. Request written language for the planned operating scenario and compare the total possible exposure. Treat verbal descriptions as clarification requests until the authorized written agreement confirms how the provider will handle the change.

Practical review checklist

  • Verify legal entity, authorization, utility coverage, and commodity before sharing enrollment authority.
  • Compare product scope and exclusions against a common usage profile and start date.
  • Review credit, billing, complaints, site changes, and notice procedures as commercial service criteria.
  • Separate supplier responsibilities from broker services and local utility delivery or emergency functions.

Questions & answers

Is the cheapest headline price always the best provider offer?

No. Excluded costs, volume terms, fees, credit requirements, and operational flexibility can change the comparison.

Can a provider guarantee fewer local power outages?

A retail supply agreement ordinarily does not control local poles, wires, or restoration. Ask for precise evidence before accepting a reliability claim.
