Identify units and delivery points

A quoted dollar amount is incomplete without its energy or volume unit. One MMBtu equals ten therms; Ccf and Mcf require heat-content and applicable correction factors. Identify the pricing hub or delivery point, meter accounts, term, and whether quantities are measured before or after fuel retention and losses. A Henry Hub reference is not the same as delivered gas at a local utility. Ask how the commodity reference is translated into the actual invoice quantity and price.

Unbundle the commercial price

Separate commodity index or fixed price, regional basis, pipeline transportation, storage, fuel, balancing, supplier margin, and local distribution. Some offers bundle several items while others pass them through. Ensure the same cost is not included in a quoted adder and added again in the model. Check which components can change, whether capacity reservations create fixed charges, and what reconciliation information the supplier provides. Reconstruct an example bill before treating two gas offers as comparable.

Review daily operations and restrictions

Weather-sensitive demand can exceed or fall short of scheduled gas. Find nomination responsibilities, tolerances, imbalance settlement, operational-flow-order provisions, curtailment notices, and service firmness. Interruptible delivery can require a safe operational response independent of the commodity contract. Identify who is available to receive notices and act during extreme conditions. Planned process changes, building closure, credit support, renewal, and termination also need attention. Consult qualified advisers for unclear obligations rather than assuming a gas product follows electricity conventions.

Hypothetical cold-weather test

A facility normally uses 100 MMBtu per day but can require 160 MMBtu during a cold spell. Ask each bidder to show the calculation if actual demand reaches that level under its swing provisions and the utility’s restrictions. Then ask what changes if a holiday shutdown reduces use sharply. A fixed commodity price alone may not resolve either scenario. Preserve the supplier’s written methodology and verify that the executed terms actually incorporate any accommodation promised in the proposal.

Practical review checklist

  • Normalize therm, MMBtu, Ccf, or Mcf quotes using applicable heat content and correction factors.
  • Record the hub, delivery point, commodity, basis, transport, fuel, storage, balancing, and LDC scope.
  • Assign daily nomination, restriction-notice, and curtailment-response responsibilities with backup contacts.
  • Test cold weather, shutdowns, renewal, site changes, and termination against the signed provisions.

Questions & answers

Does fixing Henry Hub fix every delivered gas charge?

No. Basis, transport, balancing, distribution, and other defined components may remain variable.

Can the supplier guarantee uninterrupted gas service through any constraint?

Examine both commodity and delivery obligations. Firmness, force majeure, and utility operating rules require account-specific review.
