Start with a dated reference and delivery period

Specify whether the analysis uses a spot series, forward indication, supplier proposal, or published outlook and record its date. A winter delivery product differs from a calendar-year average or today’s cash gas. EIA identifies production, imports, storage, weather, infrastructure, and demand as important drivers. These relationships support scenarios, not a precise guaranteed result. This guide provides no current numerical price forecast and should not be interpreted as a live quote or trading recommendation.

Separate national commodity from local delivery

Regional basis can move differently from a benchmark when pipeline constraints, local demand, or storage conditions change. Transportation, fuel, balancing, utility distribution, and supplier terms add further differences. A business with a fixed benchmark but floating basis retains local exposure. A weather-sensitive building can also face higher quantity and price together. Use actual units and heat-content factors when translating market references to therm or volume-based budgets so unit errors do not masquerade as forecast insight.

Build a scenario range and response rules

Use base, tighter-supply, and softer-demand cases with explicit assumptions rather than a single confident number. Identify which would stress monthly cash flow or trigger a procurement review. Update the analysis when material conditions or operational plans change, not simply because a headline appears. Include production or occupancy changes and daily balancing where relevant. A scenario is a planning tool; it does not establish the probability of an outcome unless supported by an appropriate method and evidence.

Hypothetical budget sensitivity

At 50,000 MMBtu of annual exposure, an illustrative $1/MMBtu change in the specified commodity component changes modeled cost by $50,000 if quantity stays constant. If winter consumption also rises, the combined impact is larger. Model basis and delivery separately rather than assume the benchmark change applies to the whole invoice. These invented values demonstrate sensitivity, not a forecast. Finance can then decide what degree of exposure is affordable and which contract features would address the relevant risk.

Practical review checklist

  • Date every market reference and specify index, location, units, and delivery months.
  • Model commodity, basis, volume, transport, balancing, and distribution as distinct drivers.
  • Write scenario assumptions and monthly cash impacts rather than offer an unsupported point forecast.
  • Link updates and decisions to defined budget tolerances, deadlines, and approved procurement options.

Questions & answers

Does this page predict next winter’s gas price?

No. It provides a scenario framework and avoids invented forecast values. Obtain dated market sources and executable offers for a real decision.

Will fixing Henry Hub fix my gas budget?

Not necessarily. Basis, consumption, balancing, delivery, and other excluded components can remain variable.
