Project cost and retail value differ

A project’s levelized cost spreads modeled costs over its expected output under defined assumptions. It is not the same as the market value of electricity in each hour or the delivered tariff for a business. Solar and wind production varies with conditions, and the value of that output depends on when and where it occurs. Financing, construction, interconnection, curtailment, and operating assumptions can materially affect an analysis. This page provides no current numerical cost trend or future price forecast.

Procurement structures allocate different risks

A certificate purchase, retail renewable product, utility green tariff, on-site project, and off-site PPA are not economically interchangeable. A physical or financial PPA can involve long-term commitments, volume or settlement exposure, and credit requirements. A green tariff has utility program rules, while on-site economics depend on self-consumption and export compensation. Determine which environmental attributes are included and retained. A lower energy price without the relevant certificates cannot support the same renewable-use claim.

Use dated, local, complete proposals

Request project assumptions, delivery scope, escalation, fees, term, underperformance treatment, and certificate ownership. Check whether incentives are current and applicable before counting them; do not rely on an old article’s tax example. Qualified tax, legal, engineering, and accounting review may be needed for material projects. Compare cash flows and risk with the business’s actual alternatives. A nationwide technology-cost decline can coexist with local interconnection delays or a supplier quote that reflects different commercial obligations.

Hypothetical value comparison

Two illustrative solar proposals show the same modeled annual kWh, but one is aligned with the building’s daytime consumption and another exports more at a lower compensation value. Equal production does not imply equal bill benefit. Likewise, a lower PPA strike price can coexist with a less favorable settlement location or escalation. Build an hourly or otherwise suitable cash-flow model and identify retained risks. The example explains comparison logic without claiming any current project price or guaranteed saving.

Practical review checklist

  • Distinguish project cost, hourly market value, retail bill savings, and certificate pricing.
  • Compare matching procurement structures, delivery scope, output assumptions, and environmental attributes.
  • Verify current local program, interconnection, incentive, financing, and contract conditions.
  • Use full cash-flow and risk analysis with qualified review for material long-term commitments.

Questions & answers

Does cheaper solar technology guarantee cheaper business electricity?

No. Delivered costs, timing, financing, networks, program rules, and contracts also affect the result.

Is an unbundled REC the same purchase as a PPA?

No. A REC transfers attributes; a PPA creates additional energy or financial obligations under its terms.
