What to establish before acting

Start with the actual exposure in the supply agreement. A fixed commodity component, floating basis, utility tariff, and changing load react differently to market drivers. Use dated primary references and write alternative cases for fuel, weather, system conditions, and operations. Estimate monthly cash effects and define when the business would review procurement. A forecast without a delivery period or a complete unit definition is not decision-ready, and a forward curve is not a guaranteed future spot outcome.

Illustrative decision boundary

At an illustrative 200,000 kWh of exposed energy, a $0.01/kWh change means $2,000 for that component at constant volume. This sensitivity does not predict the change or establish a full bill impact. Add other components and a volume case separately.

Documents for a useful review

  • Dated reference, location, units, delivery period, and source.
  • Contract exposure, quantity forecasts, and transparent scenario assumptions.
  • Monthly cash effects, risk limits, deadlines, and approval rules.

Questions & answers

Can anyone guarantee the lowest buying month?

A claim of certainty needs scrutiny. Future markets and account terms are uncertain; budget tolerance, valid offers, and deadlines remain necessary decision inputs.

Are futures forecasts?

They are references for specified future wholesale products. Their eventual relation to spot prices and retail bills is uncertain, and they do not include every customer-specific service.

Should I use one point estimate?

A base case can be useful if labeled, but scenarios expose downside, upside, and cash requirements. Do not present invented probabilities or confidence intervals without a defensible method.

Why can local gas diverge from Henry Hub?

Pipeline constraints, regional demand, storage, and service conditions can change basis independently. Forecast benchmark and regional components separately where the contract leaves them exposed.

When should the outlook change?

Update when evidence materially changes the assumptions or business decision, and record dates and reasons. News volume alone should not drive repeated unsupported buying instructions.

What makes a scenario different from a prediction?

A scenario states conditional assumptions and their consequences. It need not assert that the event will occur; preserve that distinction when presenting the budget to decision makers.
