What to establish before acting
Start by defining the electricity boundary and intended statement. An annual renewable match, project-support claim, hourly supply claim, and emissions result require different evidence. A certificate purchase can be separate from energy delivery and does not provide backup. Review the exact product and any certification through official resources. Preserve records that show the attributes were not claimed elsewhere and satisfy the relevant criteria. Public marketing can need additional qualification beyond an internal procurement summary.
Illustrative decision boundary
A hypothetical company uses 500 MWh but receives retirement evidence for only 300 qualifying MWh. It should not describe the whole year as fully matched while the remaining quantity is unresolved. Reconcile consumption and evidence before publishing a percentage.
Documents for a useful review
- Consumption boundary and period with compatible MWh totals.
- Product criteria, contract, attribute ownership, and retirement evidence.
- Verified certification details and a narrowly substantiated public statement.
Questions & answers
How much electricity does one REC represent?
Generally one MWh of renewable generation attributes under the applicable system. Confirm eligibility and quality; quantity alone does not establish suitability for the intended claim.
Can the same REC be claimed twice?
The ownership and retirement system is intended to prevent duplicate attribute claims. Obtain records identifying the beneficiary, quantity, and purpose rather than rely on a purchase invoice alone.
Does Green-e certify every offering by a supplier?
Do not infer company-wide coverage. Verify the exact product, period, market, and official listing, then review its commercial terms separately.
Are RECs carbon offsets?
No. They represent different rights and units. A REC is not automatically a specific quantity of avoided emissions or a credit against direct gas combustion.
Can I claim renewable use after selling rooftop RECs?
Do not assume that. Selling attributes transfers important claim rights, and the public statement should reflect what was retained under the actual agreement.
What if only part of electricity is matched?
Calculate the matched share from eligible retired quantities and complete consumption within the same boundary. Explain the remaining unmatched portion rather than round a partial purchase into a full claim.
