Choose the procurement route deliberately
An unbundled REC purchase transfers attributes without replacing retail supply. A supplier product can combine energy and attributes. A utility green tariff follows its program rules, while a physical or financial wind PPA can create a long-term energy or settlement commitment. On-site wind is a separate technical and property project. Confirm local eligibility and required approvals rather than assume one model works nationwide. Each route needs a different cost comparison and evidence package.
Evaluate time, location, and output risks
Wind output depends on the resource and operating conditions. Settlement location can differ from the business’s load zone, and production can occur in hours with a different value from the company’s purchases. Curtailment, outages, construction delays, and market conditions affect economics. A fixed PPA strike does not guarantee a fixed total retail bill. Obtain a suitable production and cash-flow analysis and stress low output, unfavorable basis, and negative-price conditions where relevant to the proposed structure.
Protect attribute and reporting integrity
The agreement should specify REC delivery, technology, geography, vintage, replacement obligations, and retirement rights. A photograph of turbines does not substantiate a renewable claim. Annual certificates do not automatically demonstrate hourly wind supply, and a project-linked purchase is not necessarily proof of a specific global emissions reduction. Verify certification at product level where used. Qualified legal, accounting, treasury, tax, and technical review may be necessary for material long-term arrangements and marketing statements.
Practical comparison example
A business compares an annual wind REC purchase with a fifteen-year financial wind agreement. Both may support an attribute objective if criteria are satisfied, but only the second creates the specified project settlement and long-term credit exposure. The company should not rank them by certificate or strike price alone. Compare the intended claim, total obligations, cash-flow scenarios, staff capacity, and exit provisions. The example illustrates different scopes rather than recommending either route or claiming a current wind price.
Practical review checklist
- Define whether the objective is attributes, retail supply, project participation, or on-site generation.
- Verify eligibility and compare full structure, term, costs, credit, and delivery or settlement obligations.
- Model variable output, time mismatch, location basis, curtailment, delays, and applicable negative-price exposure.
- Confirm REC rights and retirement evidence, with qualified review for material commitments and claims.
Questions & answers
Does buying wind RECs replace my utility?
No. Attribute purchases can be separate from ordinary retail supply and physical delivery.
Does annual wind matching mean the facility ran on wind every hour?
No. Hourly matching requires evidence and methodology beyond a simple annual MWh certificate total.
