What to establish before acting
Verify the premise’s delivery utility and ESI ID before assuming competitive retail eligibility. Municipal, cooperative, and other Texas arrangements require their own checks. ERCOT describes an energy-only wholesale design, which differs from a PJM-style forward capacity market but still includes ancillary services and reliability mechanisms. A commercial offer can allocate those costs in different ways. Use the actual terms to identify what is fixed, indexed, passed through, or adjustable and how load changes affect the product.
Illustrative decision boundary
Two hypothetical REPs offer the same energy rate, but one passes specified ancillary costs through and the other bundles them. Their headline match does not establish equal risk. Request a component matrix and comparable scenario before selecting, while retaining the same physical utility delivery.
Documents for a useful review
- ESI ID, delivery utility, account class, and current REP agreement.
- Complete supplier components, TDU charges, fees, and adjustment terms.
- Accepted enrollment and verified billing with separate outage contacts.
Questions & answers
Does ERCOT send my normal retail invoice?
Ordinarily the REP bills retail supply and applicable delivery items under the arrangement. ERCOT performs wholesale and market functions rather than acting as the business’s ordinary supplier.
Does every Texas business use retail choice?
No. Utility ownership, territory, and market participation differ. A postal address or statewide slogan is insufficient account-level evidence.
What does energy-only mean?
It distinguishes ERCOT’s market design from certain forward capacity markets. It does not mean all costs are one simple energy charge or that ancillary services are absent.
Can a REP fix my whole bill?
Read the scope. Usage, TDU tariffs, taxes, volume provisions, and exceptions can change costs even when specified supply components are fixed.
Will switching providers improve storm restoration?
An ordinary supplier change uses the same delivery network. Use the TDU’s published outage process and evaluate resilience separately from retail price.
Is ERCOT 4CP identical to a local monthly peak?
No. System-coincident and local demand calculations can use different intervals, quantities, reset dates, and tariff treatment. Obtain the applicable methodology before estimating a load-management benefit.
